Keeping Things Simple

Keeping things simple is challenging when you get caught up listening to all the life and business experts.  Promoting new systems and telling you what you should and shouldn’t do, to be successful.  We’ve all heard the stories of the overnight successes – call me cynical, but it’s often those who are selling their formula.

The pressure of everything you ‘should’ do leads to a whole heap of questioning, overwhelm, perfection and guilt – not a recipe for success in my book!

Far too often, I find complementary practitioners and therapists jumping from one idea to another.  They feel stuck and rarely make any progression with building their practice.  They’re left floundering, exhausted and feeling like nothing ever works, despite all their hard work.

Sound familiar?

We’ve all been there.  Making constant comparisons to those who are publicly flourishing (although, we will never know what is actually happening behind scenes).

keeping things simpleThe times in my business where things feel easy and it just flows, are when I’ve kept things really simple.  It’s the times where I have stuck to my plan and kept my focus.  There are always great ideas bubbling, but I make a note of them for later and carry on with the task in hand.

How to simplify things

Reflect on what you are doing

This doesn’t have to be limited to your business.  If you simplify some areas of your personal life too, they will take up less brain capacity, releasing space for you to use elsewhere.

I had a massive clear out of my wardrobe and I donated 4 black bin liners full of clothes to the local charity shop.  Now I have less choices to consider (making decisions easier) and bonus, nothing gets crushed in my wardrobe.

Start by taking a long look at what currently takes up your time and energy.  Why do you do, what you do?  If there is a true purpose behind it, work out if there is something you can do to make it better.

Great questions to ask yourself:

Avoid impulsive decisions

Being impulsive can end up making things more complicated.  If you rush into a decision, you can easily make the wrong decision.

I completely fell into this trap with a piece of software that promised to revolutionise elements of my business.  I watched a webinar and to get the ‘special offer’, signed up there and then.  Fast forward two years and I ended up cancelling my subscription as I struggled to make it work for me and never even used the ‘special offer bonuses’!

Sometimes simple just means pause for a while and sit with it.  Make a decision based on what you need now, rather than the shiny promise of great things to come.

Start with one thing!

Once you have identified areas that you can simplify, start with one thing and get that done before moving onto the next on your list.

Focus on what you do best, especially when it comes to your marketing and do it well.  A great article to help you with this is marketing to your strengths.

Focus on the activities that help you or your practice to grow and stop doing the ones that don’t.

Avoid committing to anything that isn’t right for you as you won’t achieve anything worthwhile with your time.

Start new projects from a place of simplicity

Moving on, if you start tasks with the aim of keeping things simple, you will be able to manage them easily s they develop.  Work out the minimum that you need to do and do that, but do it well.

We complicate things by constantly doing more, adding more and overthinking everything.  Keeping things simple is about chipping away at the pile of everything that isn’t required to get to the things that are important.
